About 18 ago months I took what felt like a huge risk and cut my hair in a long pixie. It’s much longer now, closer to a bob, but it was really short for quite a while. After cutting it, I get comments and questions about my hair all the time. Complete strangers will stop me in airports, grocery stores, or just walking down the street and tell me how much they love my haircut. If it’s a woman, what typically follows is “I could never do that. My hair is too (fill in the blank).”
My hair isn’t special. It’s not perfectly suited to a short haircut. What most people really mean is that they are scared to cut their hair really short, which is completely valid! It was scary for me too. But if you really would like to cut your hair short and think you can’t, this post is for you.
How to Wear a Short Haircut with Fine Hair
I titled this post “How to Wear a Short Haircut with Fine Hair” because that’s what I have, fine hair. But I also spoke to my stylist before writing this post, and I’ll share what she had to say about it too. You can get something from this post no matter the texture of your hair!
Find the Right Stylist
Let’s assume that you are ready to embrace cutting your hair, and you just need to be assured that you can pull it off. First things first, do you have a stylist that you love and trust to cut it in a short style?
Longer styles require a little less finesse than short styles in my opinion, so if you’re not loving your stylist’s cuts, maybe it’s time to find a new one. My best advice for how to find an amazing stylist locally is to just ask around. If you have a friend that has a great cut, ask her, but you can also just ask a stranger! That’s how I found my current stylist, and I certainly don’t mind at all when people stop me and ask. It’s fun knowing that someone likes my cut, and I love passing on my talented stylist’s name. Ultimately, the success of my hair starts with her.
What did my stylist have to say about who can wear a short haircut? Texture isn’t as important as proportion. In her opinion, the haircut should go with the proportions of the body/face. In other words, if you have a really long face or are really really tall, short hair might not be the best cut for you.
The Short Hair Secret Weapon
You fine-haired girls know, our hair tends to be a little flat and doesn’t hold curl that well. Regardless of how thick or thin your hair is (fine refers to the texture of each individual strand, not how many strands you have), you will need a secret weapon to wear short hair well. What is it? PRODUCT.
I had someone comment on my hair once and said, per usual, that she could never wear hers like that. I told her it was just product, to which she replied that she doesn’t do products in her hair. So if you are one of those people who is anti-product for any reason, this may not be the haircut for you. But if you do use product, here is exactly what I use and why.
Product Must Haves
From left to right in photo above:
-
- Amika Bombshell Blowout Spray – This product is amazing at getting lift at the roots, just where you need it. You will immediately feel the extra texture as you are blow drying your hair.
- Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo – Dry shampoo has become a favorite product of mine since cutting my hair. It’s so easy to refresh your short haircut and get another day of great style with dry shampoo. I’m currently using Oribe’s Gold Lust from my last BirchBox and it’s great. I also like Amika and R+CO’s versions.
- Beautiful Nutrition Lemon Rinse – With product use comes some buildup. This weekly rinse keeps my fine hair from getting too weighed down, the opposite of the volume you’re going for.
- Keune Volumizing Powder – This powder is perfect for applying a little extra texture and volume to specific places, and is great for touchups the next day.
- Moroccanoil Smoothing Lotion – This smoothing lotion is really lightweight, and you only need a little bit. It is especially helpful in the warm, humid months, but I use it year round to keep my hair from getting frizzy.
Now you have the foundation for a really great short haircut. Were you hoping for some styling how-to’s? Good, because I’ve got you covered.

Thank you for getting specific with the products you use! Even my stylist, as awesome and talented as she is, is pretty vague about the actual products that make the style work. I just found your blog through Pinterest, and I’m definitely coming back.
