Playing with Color: Yellow

Playing with Color: Yellow

Most of us have colors that we gravitate towards.  You will probably always find blue in my house, in a variety of shades and forms.  I definitely lean towards cool toned colors, but that wasn’t always the case.  Only about 7 years ago, I loved burnt orange, shades of brown, and deep wine.  Part of the shift is probably due to trends.  Gray became “the neutral”, and like most people I jumped on the bandwagon.

Playing with color is a great way to try new things and change up your home, but there are some colors I’ve not used before because I thought I just didn’t like them, or that they weren’t my style.  The more I learn about color, the more I realize that it’s narrow minded to say that a color isn’t my style.  There are so many shades and tints of a color, so many different hues when you start mixing other colors in, I’m certain that there isn’t a color that you couldn’t find a version of that you love.

Yellow is a color I considered to fall under the “not my style” category.  Too bold, too neon, or too sweet, just too much.  Let me introduce you to some designers who know how to do yellow really well, and have me reconsidering my stance.

This kitchen by John Oetegan goes the soft buttery route.  The color feels happy and charming, especially paired with the French details and fun wallpaper.

Designer Mona Ross Berman also uses a fun wallpaper in soft yellow, and I love the different tones she includes throughout the room.  Notice the mustard yellow piping on the pillow and the bright yellow blanket stored on the nightstand.  Using different tones helps the room feel layered and collected.

Bold yellow is still a bit out of my comfort zone, but I love a good patterned wallpaper.  Paige from The Pink Clutch created this stunning room, and I love how the bold blue complements the yellow wallpaper in her dining room.

And now the designer who inspired me to consider yellow at all, Meg Braff.  Her work is so colorful, energetic, and full of pattern.  The yellow in this living room pops against the white without feeling to stark or abrupt.

This bedroom is also by Meg Braff, and includes wallpaper of her own design.

I’d love to hear about your favorite colors to use in your home.  Is yellow one of them?
