Playing with Scale: Oversized Lamps

One of the biggest things I’ve learned in my interior design journey is the importance of scale.  Of course there are a million ways to get the scale wrong, some more obvious than others.  If you put oversize leather sofas in a small sitting room, the scale will be off.

One of the mistakes I made with scale a few years ago was buying side tables and lamps that were WAY too small for our king size bed.  Picture something about 18″ square, as opposed to the 26″ round tables I later replaced them with.  They were adorable and affordable, 2 things I’ve found that often lead me to making the wrong purchase.  The lamps were little task lamps, and definitely didn’t give off enough light to read easily in bed.

I learned that lesson in scale, and I’m working on picking out some oversized lamps for both our master bedroom and our front sitting room.  Below are some gorgeous oversized lamps, and I love how the designers have gone bold with color and scale.  At the end of the post I’ve included some of my personal favorite lamps, some of which I’m considering for my own home.

Jennifer from The Pink Pagoda used blue and white ceramic lamps to really give a wow factor.  Especially in the second photo, the scale of the oversized lamps causes them to become a feature, rather than something that just provides some extra light.

In the past, I probably would have chosen a small task lamp to sit on a desk like this.  But look how well the scale of the lamp works with the size of the mirror.  And there is still plenty of space on the desk to place other objects as needed.

When using a large lamp like the one in this photo, you don’t need much else on the table to make it feel styled and finished.

This lamp is large enough to provide light for both beds.

A pair of oversized lamps was just what this buffet needed!

Oversized lamps do a lot for a space.  They have more visual impact than smaller lamps, allowing you to get more decorating punch, as well as giving off more light.  They take up more room on surfaces, so you need fewer items on the surface for it to feel “done”.  Below are a few of my favorites from around the web, some of which I’m considering for 2 rooms in my home.
